Unlike the Washington Post, the Times' print edition left out Obama's two $30,000 entry fee fundraisers in Manhattan in favor of these vital details from his visit to the Tastee Sub Shop in Edison, NJ: "Mr. Obama ordered a six-inch 'super sub' - he declared that at nearly 49 he can no longer eat the 12-inch variety - and sat down at a table with the owner, Dave Thornton, and the owners of three businesses in nearby towns."

And Hulse is helping them do it: "Calculating that moderate and independent voters might be turned off by some of the more extreme positions postulated by Tea Party types and Republican conservatives, the Democratic National Committee and Congressional Democrats are trying to join the two in the minds of voters."

The online headline to Tuesday's front-page Washington Post story by Greg Jaffe and Peter Finn: “ WikiLeaks disclosures unlikely to change course of Afghanistan war .”

Times Focuses on Obama's Populist Sub Shop Stop in NJ, Skips Glitzy Manhattan Fundraising Tour

David Herszenhorn and Jackie Calmes reported on Obama's politically calculated visit to the Tastee Sub Shop in Edison, N.J. in Thursday's “ Obama Trumpets Party's Small-Business Bona Fides .”

The paper's political team let Obama fully sell himself as a down-home populist by completely skipping (in the print edition) the fact that Obama would be departing from down-home Edison to two glitzy fundraisers in the Times' home town Manhattan. Obama traveled by helicopter to a fundraiser at the Four Seasons in Manhattan, then to Vogue editor Anna Wintour's townhouse for another.

Calmes filed a report on the fundraisers Wednesday night for the paper's “Caucus” blog: “After an afternoon of populism, lunching with small-business owners in New Jersey and gabbing with the opinionated ladies of ABC-TV’s “The View,” President Obama ended his day on Wednesday at separate $30,400-a-person fundraisers here in Manhattan.”

But those politics-as-usual details didn't make it into the print story, leaving room for these vital nuggets: Obama “ordered a 'super sub with everything,' to highlight his party’s small-business agenda....Mr. Obama ordered a six-inch 'super sub' -- he declared that at nearly 49 he can no longer eat the 12-inch variety -- and sat down at a table with the owner, Dave Thornton, and the owners of three businesses in nearby towns.”

Peter Applebome's Thursday “ Our Town ” column made a glancing reference to the fundraisers, calling the president's sub shop stop “the populist portion of the president’s visit to the region before decidedly less-modest stops in New York.”

In contrast, the Washington Post managed to notice the disparity in Thursday's print edition, “ On midterm campaign trail, Obama mixes populist appeal with wooing of big donors .”

President Obama's message to voters this election year is simple and full of populist zeal: Democrats are on the side of the little guy, not the Wall Street brokers, celebrities and chief executives....In town after town, the president is holding events that highlight his party's work on behalf of the average Joe -- but that are carefully scheduled to leave plenty of time for unpublicized fundraisers with people who are anything but.

They certainly weren't publicized in the New York Times.

As Dems Go to War, Hulse Helpfully Notes GOP's 'More Extreme Positions'

Congressional reporter Carl Hulse briefly reported on the Democratic Party's announcing its new mode of attack against the Republicans in November -- they're all Tea Partying extremists! -- in Thursday's “ Democrats Try to Make Tea-G.O.P. Connection .”

Many Republicans have been very eager to associate themselves with Tea Party followers, hoping to tap into the movement’s deep enthusiasm. Now Democrats say they are more than willing to help Republicans do so.

Calculating that moderate and independent voters might be turned off by some of the more extreme positions postulated by Tea Party types and Republican conservatives , the Democratic National Committee and Congressional Democrats are trying to join the two in the minds of voters.

Hulse ran down some of those “more extreme” positions:

It embraces more consensus conservative positions, like the repeal of the new health care law and extension of all the Bush tax cuts, as well as some less widely shared, like ending the direct election of senators; abolishing the Departments of Energy and Education and the Environmental Protection Agency, and ending Medicare.

Ending Medicare is out of the mainstream, abolishing the Education Department much less so; but the Times is not in the habit of tarring left-wing policy initiatives as “extreme.”

Hulse let the GOP have a say:

Republicans were not impressed. They portrayed the new effort to merge the Tea Party and the Grand Old Party as a desperate effort to distract voters from the Democratic agenda.

Dueling Protests: The socially conservative Summer for Marriage Tour hits Madison, Wisconsin

Why would the socially conservative National Organization for Marriage hold an anti-gay marriage rally in Madison, Wisconsin, where the group was sure of being badly outnumbered by motivated and well-organized critics? Maybe, writes Steve Chapman, because that's what the group wanted. The rally managed to make opponents of gay marriage look like a brave, embattled minority, even though they constitute 53 percent of the public and have gotten their way in all but a few states.

Bill to Legalize Online Gambling Advances

Yesterday the House Committee on Financial Services approved the Internet Gambling Regulation and Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act by a vote of 41 to 22. The bill, sponsored by the committee's chairman, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), would make online gambling (except for sports betting) legal at the federal level while allowing states to prohibit betting within their borders. The committee members who voted yes (PDF) included 34 out of 42 Democrats (81 percent) and seven out of 29 Republicans (24 percent). The New York Times , which headlined its story (a bit hyperbolically) "Congress Rethinks Its Ban on Internet Gambling," portrays the development as a sign that legislators are desperate for new sources of revenue. A companion bill, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act, would authorize the collection of fees and taxes from online gambling businesses, while players' winnings would be taxable as income. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that legalizing online gambling would generate $42 billion in federal revenue during the first decade....

Surviving the Obama Assault on the Rule of Law

Hours after yesterday's decision by President Bill Clinton judicial appointee Susan Bolton to preemptively stop enforcement of Arizona's immigration enforcement law, Thomas A. Saenz, president of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), told The New York Times : "This is a warning to any other jurisdiction." Just in case the message from the Obama administration and its leftist allies was not clear, Obama appointee U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke told The Associated Press : "Surely it's going to make states pause and consider how they're drafting legislation and how it fits in a constitutional framework."

But no amount of pause by states and localities could ever possibly satisfy the Obama administration, its amnesty allies, and activist judges like Bolton. In a textbook case of judicial activism, Judge Bolton rewrote the Arizona law to her own needs, invented her own facts and ignored clear federal law. President Jimmy Carter appointee and immigration law professor at Yale Law School Peter Schuck told The New York Times : "She rushed to judgment in a way I can only assume reflects a lot of pressure from the federal government to get this case resolved quickly."

The Obama administration's case against Arizona sought to preemptively stop enforcement of Arizona's new immigration law. The legal term for this is a "facial challenge," and federal precedent is clear that facial challenges "must be careful not to go beyond the statute's facial requirements and speculate about 'hypothetical' or imaginary cases." But that is exactly what Judge Bolton did. First, she ignored Section 2(B) of the law as written and completely ignored the section's first sentence that required an officer to have "reasonable suspicion" that a person was in the country illegally before their immigration status should be checked. Then, she invented a completely hypothetical case about a Chilean dog walker detained by a completely fictional Sheriff Smith. Finally, despite the fact that 8 U.S.C. §1373 clearly requires the federal government to "respond to an inquiry by a…State, or local government agency, seeking to verify or ascertain the citizenship or immigration status of any individual," Judge Bolton concluded that the Obama administration's decision not to enforce this provision was as good as rewriting the law itself.

Taken alone, the White House's behavior on this issue is troubling enough. But put into the broader context of the first 18 months of this Administration, a truly pernicious pattern emerges. First, there was the Obama Justice Department's decision to dismiss voter intimidation charges against the New Black Panther Party . Then there was the Obama administration's use of TARP to bail out its union allies in what bankruptcy law scholars have called "so outrageous and illegal that until March of this year [2009], nobody even conceptualized it." Then there was the Obama administration's shakedown of BP in the White House's Roosevelt Room . Less than a week later after a federal court found its first oil drilling ban to be "arbitrary and capricious," the Obama administration issued a second oil drilling ban that was wider and killed even more jobs than the first .

Americans cannot be cowed by the Obama administration and its La Raza and MALDEF allies. Giving into bullies only encourages their behavior. Finally this lawsuit should be a permanent reminder to everyone who wants to call themselves a conservative that any and all claims about an amnesty deal are complete fiction. La Raza and MALDEF will fight every enforcement measure in any such deal tooth and nail while administrations like this one will simply choose not to enforce them. Meanwhile, the amnesty provisions would be instantaneous and permanent. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has vowed to fight this decision all the way to the Supreme Court, and she deserves support.
